Browsers & Flash

What browsers can I use?

On Windows we support Internet Explorer 6.0+ and Firefox 1.5+. We don't completely support Opera (layout issues mainly). On the Mac, we support Safari 1.03+, Firefox 1.5+ and Camino. Mac users may see slower playback performance since we're using Flash, which has some performance issues on the Mac. This has improved with the new Intel based Macs.

The Home Page keeps asking me to install something. What's going on?

Sounds like you're having a problem with the Macromedia Flash plugin. If you're using Internet Explorer, you will need to restart your browser for the plugin to register correctly. This is an Internet Explorer/Windows issue only.

I'm having trouble installing the Flash plugin

On Windows, you need to have Admin privileges on your machine to install the Flash plugin for Internet Explorer. If you're having trouble working this out, we recommend that you install Firefox. The Flash plugin should install easily.

Can I use Jumpcut on Linux?

At this point, Flash 8/9 does not run officially on Linux (although there is a Beta), so Jumpcut will not work (officially). As soon as Macromedia releases a Linux compatible version of Flash 8/9, Jumpcut should work well on Linux.
Uploading

What is the largest file I can upload?

Currently, the max upload size is 100MB. If you have a larger file, you may attempt to clip it using software on your desktop and then upload the useful portion of the video. Stay tuned for the launch of our Jumpup Client that will help you with things like this in the future.

What video formats can I upload?

We support many different video formats including .mpg, .mpeg, .mp4, .avi, .mov, .wmv, .flv, .rm, 3GP (mobile) etc. If you have any upload or playback issues with your video, be sure to click the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page and let us know about it.

What image formats can I upload?

You can upload all types of image formats including .jpg, .gif, .png, .tiff and .bmp

What audio formats can I upload?

We like .mp3 files the best, but we support others including .aiff, .wav and .ogg.

Can I upload more than one thing at a time?

Sure, our flash multi-file uploader lets you select multiple files at a time. You can also do a multi-file upload from within the Editor, and you can even send multiple files to your Personal Upload Email Address.

I can upload files by email?

You sure can. Check your profile for your email upload code. If your username is "jackrobertson" and your code is "123456" your email address for uploading would be "jackrobertson+moc.tucpmuj.daolpu|654321#moc.tucpmuj.daolpu|654321". Remember to include the plus sign in the address. You can use this address from any computer, from your phone, or you can even give it out to friends so they can send their stuff right into your account (media uploaded by email will be set to private by default). Be smart about choosing the people you give your upload address to, and remember that you can change your code at any time.

Can I upload from my mobile phone?

Absolutely! Just program your Personal Upload Email Address (see above) into your phone's address book and you can send pictures and video right into your account. You'll need to have email on your phone to do this, but it works great.
Visibility & Organization

What's the difference between a movie and a clip?

Good question! On Jumpcut, Clips (aka video clips) are single video files that were uploaded by our users. Movies are what you create using the Jumpcut Editor. They are combinations of individual video clips, photos, music, titles and effects. Movies are analagous to photo slideshows, but you can do a lot more.

The distinction between clips and movies can be confusing to some people because they're used to video sites that just let you upload individual clips. We think Jumpcut is more exciting because you can use these raw materials to make your own movies.

But, if you want to make a movie out of a single video clip, you can do that too. Just press Remix on the clip to open it up in the editor and then Publish.

What's the difference between public and private content?

Public content is visible to everyone on the Jumpcut.com site. By default, Private content is viewable on Jumpcut.com by the owner only. However, if you send a link to your Private content to someone by email (or post the link on another website), anyone who clicks on the link will be able to see the Private content. You can also send your Private content to a Group and it will be visible there. If the Group is public, anyone on Jumpcut.com will be able to see your content.

Everything is remixable?

Everything that's public is remixable. However, you can publish a movie as Private - Not Remixable. This means that nobody else can Remix your movie. You can still Remix your own stuff by clicking on the Remix link on the View Page. The Not Remixable option is not currently available for Public movies.

What about shared audio?

Sorry, your uploaded audio files are always private and cannot be shared. We will soon be providing music for the community, so stay tuned.

If I make something public, can I make it private again?

Yes, just go to the View page and change the visibility by clicking on the [edit] link next to the blue pencil. However, if someone else has already grabbed your stuff and used it in one of their movies, it will continue to play in that movie. Remember that visibility settings apply to movies AND the clips/photos that are used in the movie. You will need to update visibility for each different item to make your stuff private again. Also, if you've sent an item to a Group, it will remain in that Group, regardless of your visibility settings.

I made stuff private, but now it's showing up as public. What's going on?

Most likely, you included your private items in a movie that you made public. When you make a movie public, you also make all of the items in that movie public. This happens autiomatically and is necessary to support the Remixing capability, which is available for all public movies.

Can I delete things from the site?

You can if you're the owner. Go to the View page and click on Delete. Your media will be removed from public view. However, if someone else has already grabbed your stuff and used it in one of their movies, it will continue to play in that movie.

What is a Set?

A set is a container (album, collection, bin etc.) that you can use to organize your media (including grabbed stuff) in preparation for making a movie. Sets will also display inside the editor. Once you create a set, you can add items to it from within your page. When you're done adding things to a set, you can create a movie from all items in the set with a single click on New Movie From Set. Items can exist in more than one set.

What happens when I Grab something?

When you grab someone else's media, it's added to a special section of your library called Grabbed stuff. You can then add it to one of your own sets or drag it into a movie from within the + Add tab of the Editor. If the owner deletes something that you have previously grabbed, you will no longer see it in your Grabbed stuff, but it will still play in any movies that you made pre-deletion. If you grab a movie, you also grab all of the clips and photos used in that movie.
Editing

I don't have video, can I make photo slideshows?

Absolutely. You can easily make great photo slideshows on Jumpcut. Once you upload your photos, add them to a set and create a movie from that set. All of your photos will load into the movie. You can change photo duration, choose transitions and add music. You can even add titles and effects.

What is Remixing?

Remixing is making your own version of someone else's movie, also known as mashing. Essentially it's the equivalent of Save As.

Can I modify my movies after I've published them?

Of course, that's one of the best things about Jumpcut - you do your creative work online. To modify one of your movies, just hit the Remix button on the player. When you Remix your own movies, you don't create another copy. You're updating the original.

How do I reduce the length of a video clip in the editor?

Select the clip in the tile pane and go to the Clip tab. You can change the duration numerically, you can zoom in and use the trimmers or you can use the i and o keys on your keyboard to set in and out points.

Can I add transitions, titles and effects to my movie?

You certainly can. Transitions are on the Clip tab. Titles and Effects have their own tabs. It might take a few tries before you get it right, but once you do, you'll be able to greatly enhance your movies.

Can I upload content once I'm in the editor?

Yes. Go to the + Add tab and choose Upload. This is a multi-file upload. Items uploaded in the Editor will go right into the movie and will also be stored in your account.

Can I get to my other stuff from inside the editor?

Yes. Go to the + Add tab and select any of your sets from the dropdown list of sets. You can also search for clips and photos on Jumpcut. This is a great way to add to your movie on the fly.

I need a section of black video for my movie. What do I do?

In the editor, go to the Add Clips tab and select Useful Stuff from the dropdown list of sets. Grab the black tile and drag it into your movie. Use the Clip tab to change the duration of the black photo.

Can I download my movies?

Right now Jumpcut does not offer downloads. If you're interested in sharing your movies with others, we provide a number of ways to do that. Please take a look through the Sharing section of our Quick Guide.

Can I adjust the size of an embedded movie?

Yes you can. The size parameters are in the embed code. Make sure you change them in both places.

What if I see something that is inappropriate or offensive?

We're committed to keeping Jumpcut a clean and fun environment for all of our users. If you see something that bothers you, click on Flag it from the view page and let us know. Content that is inappropriate for all members of the community will either be marked restricted or removed. Users posting offensive content will be banished.

What if I find copyrighted material?

Jumpcut respects copyright holders. Therefore, it is Jumpcut's policy to respond to notices of alleged infringement that comply with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (the text of which can be found at the U.S. Copyright Office Website, http://lcWeb.loc.gov/copyright/) and other applicable intellectual property laws.
